Design consultancy tests app UX and usability with global users

The Challenge

Liveminds recently worked with an award-winning design consultancy to help test and obtain feedback on their new video app. The challenge was to get app users from three key markets worldwide to test its video capturing capabilities in a variety of scenarios and to provide feedback on the app and videoing in general.

The Solution

The Liveminds platform was used for a week long project with 15 participants across three markets - UK, USA and Hong Kong. The participants were split into geographical groups and asked a series of questions over seven days.

Platform Branding

The project was custom branded for the design consultancy, this provided participants with a consistent experience from application to completion and increased their confidence in using the platform.

Research Activities

A mixture of web and mobile app questions were used to utilise the benefits of both formats. Mobile app questions allowed participants to capture ‘in the moment’ feedback rather than trying to recall experiences after the event. Participants were able to quickly upload mobile videos explaining how they felt while exploring the app. To counter any issues with unreliable or slow internet connection the app allows participants to capture photos and videos offline and sync them to the platform at a later time.

Web questions were used when the researcher wanted people to spend more time reflecting on their experiences and providing longer, more considered written responses on larger devices. For example, in the feedback questions where participants had to view media and state what they thought of the interface in greater detail.

Group questions, where participants can see other people's responses as well as their own, were used extensively in this project. This allowed participants to discuss their experiences and feelings together, they then considered different options and gave more detailed insight.

The Results

This project provided extensive usability information on the new video app across several key markets and the client was able to base the app development on the findings. A key benefit of the platform was that researchers were able to conduct the research in several global markets while collating the responses in one place. The platform allowed participants to upload video of themselves using the app while also providing detailed feedback via the web. The researcher presented a compelling story to the client and brought the insight vividly to life with HD videos showing how the participants used the app.
